While tipping culture isn’t huge in Malaysia, many of us still give tips to those in the service industry, like food delivery riders and e-hailing drivers. However, one Foodpanda rider said customers should stop tipping through the app because it could affect the rider’s fare.
The Foodpanda rider, Aiman, took to TikTok to show netizens what happens when customers tip riders through the food delivery app. In his video, he urged customers not to give tips through the app and instead, give it to the riders in person. He claimed that riders will earn less when customers tip through the app because their base fare will get reduced.

In another video, Aiman broke down the payment structure of when a rider receives a tip. He said the riders would still receive the full tip, but Foodpanda would reduce the base fare instead. He gave an example, showing that he received a payment of RM6.90 but was inclusive of an RM2.00 tip so he only got paid RM4.90 for the order. He also explained in the comments that his typical base fare would be above RM5 per order.
The revelation prompted many to thank the rider for clarifying the tipping process, adding that they will avoid tipping through the app and will tip riders directly. The videos also angered some and demanded a clarification from Foodpanda. However, a few Foodpanda riders said they’ve never experienced getting their base fares reduced because of tips.
As of reporting, Foodpanda has yet to clarify the issue – but if you still want to tip your Foodpanda rider, perhaps it’s best to give them directly to ensure they get their full pay.
