In Asian culture, we are often taught to respect and cherish our parents because they are the ones who gave us life and raised us. However, that belief can lead to many children feeling conflicted when dealing with irresponsible parents.
Shared anonymously through Twitter user Suraya, a Malaysian shared their frustration dealing with their financially irresponsible mother. According to the post, the mother has terrible spending habits and can easily spend RM300-RM500 a day.
The anonymous person also revealed that they are in the process of paying off their late father’s house after the mother auctioned it off. The person is also frustrated at how the mother would call her children disobedient if they refused to give her money. In response to the anonymous confession, Suraya said the story clearly shows financial abuse and emotional manipulation. She also said that after reading stories like these, she understands why some children would leave or cut ties with their parents.
Many netizens have also reacted to the story, sharing the same perspective as Suraya. As the anonymous person had asked for advice in dealing with their mother, many netizens shared that they should cut the mother off or only provide her with enough money to sustain herself. One person even advised them to seek help from the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) and get recommendations from a counsellor.
The story also got many netizens sharing similar experiences with their parents, with some adding that no children should have to deal with their parent’s financial issues. Some were also surprised at how much money the mother was spending, even wondering what she was buying. Many people also generally sympathise with the anonymous person and hope they can find a proper solution for their mother.
It must be difficult to be in this person’s place, but we hope they can find a way to solve this issue.
