Whether you prefer using Grab Food or foodpanda, everyone has been grateful for the services they provide as both companies have made everyone’s lives a lot easier. Perhaps sometime in the future, there will be no need to compare or choose between the two.
It’s been reported that the owner of foodpanda is currently in talks to sell some of its Southeast Asian business with Grab being one of its potential buyers. Here’s what we know so far:
Delivery Hero, foodpanda’s parent company, has apparently been in advance talks on selling 7 of its Southeast Asian markets which includes ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos.
“Delivery Hero confirms negotiations with several parties regarding a potential sale of its foodpanda business in selected Southeast Asia markets. Any discussions or plans are in their preliminary stages,” said a foodpanda spokesperson. According to a report by Wirtschaftswoche Business magazine yesterday (Wednesday, 20th September), the final price for the sale would be RM4.9 billion.
It was rumoured that Grab could be a potential buyer to acquire foodpanda saying that they could pay slightly more than the final price for the businesses in the aforementioned markets. TheVulcanPost reported that it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Grab were to acquire foodpanda as they’ve been working on a super app for their Southeast Asian users.
At the time of writing, Grab has yet to confirm these rumours and reports that they are actually in talks to buy part of foodpanda sales. If the acquisition were to happen, then that would make Grab basically the monopolist in Southeast Asian food deliveries as they already command 50% of the market with foodpanda being the only worthy competitor with up to 40% depending on the country.
Guess we’ll find out more details in days to come. What do you think of this news?
