When it comes to fashion at the annual Video Music Awards (VMAs), the more extravagant and audacious you are, the better. And that was certainly the case at this year’s ceremony, last week.
Besides wondering who’ll clinch the trophies and who’ll perform live on stage, fans, the music industry and fashionistas always wonder what bonkers/amazing outfits A-listers will rock on the VMAs red carpet. And based on the the show’s track record, who can blame them?
Over the years, the VMAs have featured numerous iconic – even outrageous – hair lewks, makeup, fits and nail presentations. Attendees are known for taking daring fashion risks – as could be seen last week, when there was also a multitude of traditional glamour moments in between the envelope-pushing ones.
Among the most notable lewks this year were the hairstyles, which ran the gamut from wow to WHAT?! Here are some of the top hair moments that made us sit up and take notice:
Doja Cat
We have to start with the one who gave us SO much to unpack!
The 27-year-old singer entered the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey, wearing a custom-made spider web-like garment by Monse. Under the barely-three dress, which had netting running across her chest and down her torso, Doja went topless. Now that’s a bold move. Her hairstyle, which gave a dirty blonde effect, was styled by JStayReady using Professional Hair Labs. If you’re looking for something this Halloween, Doja seems like the best inspo. With that spidey outfit and perfect pixie cut, you can never go wrong!
Megan Thee Stallion
The rapper rocked a custom-made black mesh column dress with boning elements for the big night on 13th September. She enhanced the image even further by sporting a gorgeous slicked-back hairstyle that allowed her see-through dress to command all of the focus.
Offset

Although his wife didn’t wear clips on her hair, we’re glad he did! Offset accessorized his appearance with silver duck clips down both sides of his head when he arrived on the red carpet. The hair clips gave his otherwise formal clothing some spice and complemented Cardi B’s duck-clip dress in style.
Cardi B
Hair clips everywhere – BUT on her hair!
We knew something particularly daring would be coming from Cardi B, because she frequently switches up her hairstyle. Gotta admit, it was a little disheartening when she arrived with long, shiny, middle-parted hair. It’s truly stunning, but we were hoping for a real hair moment. That was until we zoomed in on the details of her fit.
Her long, shiny hair definitely complimented the floor-length strapless gown, which was almost entirely constructed from metal duckbill (or alligator) hair clips. Now, we’re kinda glad she went with a basic hairstyle that created an overall suave look.
Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift did, in an unexpected turn of events, show up to the VMAs sporting flawlessly-disheveled fringe and a half-up style that gave off laid-back rocker vibes. From the front, it was difficult to tell whether Swift was sporting a half-up style or even a mullet, but once we got a good look at the sides and back, it became clear that she was donning a deconstructed French twist, with many pieces spilling out of the back and perfectly unkempt wavy fringe in front, all sitting above a subtle winged eye makeup look.
Shakira
Liquid gold! Lady of the hour, Shakira, who was nominated for Artist of the Year and won the Video Vanguard Award, didn’t let us down with her trademark blonde locks. Her honey-toned, beachy wave locks suited her rhinestone dress flawlessly, with a deep side part and shadow roots.
Demi Lovato
You can never go wrong with black! Demi Lovato had a flawless lewk, from her contoured makeup to her smooth, wet-looking haircut. Her hair was fashioned by Alyx Liu, who gave it a straightforward-yet-chic appearance, and we absolutely loved the outcome.
Sabrina Carpenter
In her customized Vera Wang outfit with a sparkling corseted bodice and a sheer white overlay, the Emails I Can’t Send artist exuded a contemporary angelic vibe. While playing ‘Feather’ on stage and walking the red carpet, Sabrina Carpenter rocked her signature bombshell fringe.
Kaliii
Most people wouldn’t be able to carry off this bold orange colour quite as well as Kaliii did. A contender for best new artist, Kaliii attracted attention with her two-toned, shoulder-length twists.
Karol G
Blame Barbiecore, because even long after the movie’s premiere, the pink-hair trend is still going strong. After all, pink is still the hottest colour of the season.
Karol G, a candidate for Artist of the Year, opted for an all-pink ensemble with blush-colored hair and an identical outfit. The artist was right on trend, because pink was a big deal during this year’s pre-show. Check out the beautiful ombre pink wavy locks. Definitely gave beach vibes!
