The topic of marriage has been much talked about lately, with many netizens – both married and single – sharing their perspective. After the nationwide debate about polygamy, hypergamy has now come into discussion, sparking yet another discourse between men and women.
Hypergamy is when one dates or marries someone of a higher caste, social status or sexual capital than themselves. Sharing his opinion on hypergamy, Twitter user @/suriamarsuli said, “One of the reasons I advised men to not marry someone with higher academic qualifications than them; You come back home from work to find peace, not to face someone with a girl boss attitude.” Unsurprisingly, the tweet did not sit well with many women – and even some men.
Many thought that tweet showed off the insecurity of men, who can’t accept their wives being independent or having better pay than them because it emasculates them. Some also expressed that men who feel this way about women don’t want to improve themselves and, instead, expect women to downgrade themselves to better fit their level.
The tweet also had a few debunking the man’s claim that high-achieving women will automatically be bossy, providing multiple instances where that is not the case. Some people also claimed that the man is an example of a religious individual who still believes in traditional gender roles and that women should be serving their husbands.
What do you think about the man’s claims? Do you agree with him? Or are you on the other side?
