Once upon an era, cyber cafes or internet cafés were everywhere and filled with teenagers and young adults gaming to their heart’s content. Now, personal computers are more preferred by gamers— but many still hold fond memories of the cyber cafés they once visited.
Through a Facebook post in the ‘B40 Buat Perangai Apa Harini’ group, Divo Rezzy Iskandar asked netizens about their fondest memories of being at a cyber café, adding that he misses the good ol’ days. With over 500 comments, it is safe to say that many netizens had something to share.
One of the most commonly shared cyber café memories is staying long hours on the premises, gaming the night away. One netizen said they were on the computer for so long that they only remembered to go home once they heard the Subuh azan call, signaling sunrise. Another memory that most netizens shared was getting caught at the cyber café by their parents, like one comment claiming they got punished by their father after getting caught but continued to frequent the place until the owner recognised his interest in computers.
Many also said their fondest memories lie in the games, with first-person shooter game Counter-Strike being the most popular. One netizen said they remembered when the whole cyber café played the game, to which many replied saying that it must’ve been lively. Some also shared more intimate memories with cyber cafes as it’s where they went to enjoy some “blue” entertainment or explicit materials. One comment said they once reported a friend to the café owner after catching them surfing adult sites.
While cyber cafés had a notorious reputation for being the hangout of kids playing hooky, you can’t deny their influence in the growth of the internet and digital age.
