It looks like businesses in Bukit Bintang haven’t been doing so well lately. After closing a popular dessert store, authorities have shut down another store in the city. It started with a viral video depicting a group of scantily clad belly dancers hired to perform for the anniversary celebration of a Buy & Save store.
The video got many netizens criticising the store and the controversial performance. The company has since issued a public apology for the incident – but authorities decided to further their investigation, leading to the closure of the Buy & Save store.
According to the official DBKL Facebook page, authorities have found that the store does not carry the proper business permit for its sales activities. In addition, four of the store’s foreign workers did not have valid work permits. The store was issued compound notices for employing foreign workers without a valid permit and for carrying out activities other than those permitted under the licence.
Following the announcement, many netizens praised DBKL for their work on investigating the store. Some urged them to continue the work with other stores in the entire Kuala Lumpur area. However, a few netizens also questioned the store’s fate if the video did not go viral in the first place. Some even wondered if authorities were doing regular checks before the viral video.
What do you think about the store’s closure? Do you think it would’ve still operated if it wasn’t for the viral video?
