It’s been 6 years since Taiwanese singer Sherry Zhang Hui-Mei or A-Mei (张惠妹) performed in Malaysia and local fans have been anticipating her return to our homegrown soil. Last week, music lovers finally got to experience getting “high” on her explosive performances.
Held in Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil over 2 sold-out shows, the legendary pop diva made sure every single attendee at her concert left feeling satisfied and reminded us why she’s still the reigning Queen of Mandopop. Throughout her setlist of over 20 songs, A-Mei sang some new tunes but also brought us down memory lane with her nostalgic smash hits.
The ASMeiR 2023 World Tour (ASMeiR 2023 世界巡迴演唱會) in Malaysia attracted close to 20,000 fans – including some from Singapore, Japan and Taiwan. A-Mei even recognised a hardcore Singaporean fan who have been showing up at her various concerts. The said dedicated fan was seen screaming “I love you!’ multiple times and it’s a wonder it didn’t result in a sore throat. On Friday, a male fan also got A-Mei to sing a short Happy Birthday song; coincidently, he also shares the same birthday as A-Mei’s backup singer.
Although A-Mei never fails to excite fans with her explosive and catchy numbers like “Bloody Love Story”, “Bad Boy” and “3 Days and 3 Nights” when channeling her alter-ego Amit, it was during her tender moments on ballads like “掉了” (“Disappear”) and “身后” (“Left Behind”) that got us emotional too. It was also heartwarming to see the pop diva overcome with emotion when fans were singing her songs back to her in unison.
