K-pop rapper Jessi (제시) is known to be one of the most outspoken and carefree Korean celebs in the industry. The “Zoom” artist has previously made headlines for her sexy image as well as for the crazy things that transpired during her concerts.
The American-born star has also been subjected to a lot of criticisms as she’s always been accused of “blackfishing” for several reasons including the colour of her skin tone. During a podcast interview, the 34-year-old decided to address the allegations of her “trying to be dark-skinned”.
Yesterday (Thursday, 13th July), Jessi appeared as a guest on the Fun With Dumb Podcast, hosted by Jonathan Edgar Park, famously known as Dumdfoundead, where she talked about many topics such as love, babies as well as songwriting. One of the first topics touched on the criticisms she received over the last year.
“There was a time last year when I was really tanned from the sun. I was in the sun a lot and there were people saying to me, ‘You’re trying to be dark-skinned’ but now that I don’t tan, they’re saying I want to be white. I’m like, what the hell do you want from me?” she said. The solo act also added that she can never win when it comes to arguing with people on the internet.
When asked if the comments were from global ‘fans’, the “Numb” singer clarified that most of the hate comments she received were either from bots or teenagers as the accounts will be removed or go private after she responded to them. Rather than aggressively fighting back, Jessi revealed she now prefers a calm approach saying, “You can’t attack them, but you gotta say something where they can’t say anything back.”
Despite being born with a naturally darker skin tone, the “blackfishing” or “dark-skinned” allegations never stop. The K-pop artist has previously clapped back against those who made the colorist remarks on her IG live a few times saying that they should look away or not interact with her content if they have a problem with her image. It seems that the rapper will probably never hear the end of it.
