Restaurant review videos are all over TikTok because social media is considered one of the easiest ways to promote a food establishment. It’s also one of the easiest ways for an “influencer” to make a quick buck – because this TikTok user recently revealed that an influencer demanded RM1,800 to make her dad’s restaurant go viral.
The user, Alinkiwi, shared that a TikTok influencer recently approached her father, asking if they could review his restaurant. However, the influencer added that Alin’s father would have to fork out RM1,800 if he wanted his restaurant to go viral. The exchange irked Alin, who urged the influencer to stop cheating restaurant owners with the guise of helping to promote their business.
@alinkiwi #fyp #reviewkedaimakan cukup2 la org dh tua, cari rezeki. jgnla menyusahkan pakcik2 dgn benda2 minta duit cmni.
As an influencer herself, Alin said that if her father needed help promoting his restaurant, she would help record videos or review the restaurant on her own. The content creator also shared that her father’s restaurant has been open for over 20 years and has a loyal following. However, this was the first time someone had approached them to pay for a review.
After the video went viral, many netizens urged Alin to reveal the influencer’s name to warn other businesses from getting cheated in the future. Having said that, some netizens felt that it’s normal for influencers to ask for money when promoting a business. The difference here is the influencer shamelessly offering their service unsolicited and demanding for cash.
What do you think about this? Is this the norm these days?
