There’s nothing wrong with having standards when choosing a romantic partner – and we’ve heard many stories of people having particular ideal types. However, one TikTok user recently sparked a debate of whether someone is being choosey or simply looking down on someone for their job.
The user posted a video with the caption, “I have the right to choose, don’t criticise me”. The video detailed the types of men she wouldn’t choose as a partner, which include delivery riders, factory workers, petrol station workers, and shift workers (with the exception of police officers).

After the video went viral, many netizens slammed the woman, saying she was too picky and looked down on people who are supposedly of “lower status”. As she publicly shares that she’s an employee at the popular drink shop chain Tealive, many criticise the woman for her lack of self-awareness. One netizen commented, “You want to be picky, but you only work at Tealive”, while another comment wrote, “It’s rare for engineers to be interested in Tealive employees.”
However, some netizens said it’s acceptable for the TikTok user to choose who she wants to date but but not at the expense of putting others down. One comment wrote that it’s okay to be choosey but believes someone’s future partner should be on the same level as them, career-wise. Another commenter also agreed that it’s not wrong to be picky but added that she shouldn’t look down on other people’s careers or occupations.
What do you think about this? Do you agree that people have to right to freely express their choice? Or do you think the TikTok user should take a good look into the mirror?
