There’s no denying that we have several fast food giants in Malaysia. And some of these have been around for a very long time. Take McDonald’s for instance!
Fast food franchise McDonald’s first laid its roots down at the lively Bukit Bintang over four decades ago in 1982. Needless to say, it looked very different from today. Even its menu and pricing has stark and vivid differences!

When McDonald’s first opened in Bukit Bintang on 29th May 1982, crowds of people gathered to witness its opening. Why? Well, the McDonald’s at Bukit Bintang was not only it’s first restaurant in KL, it was also the franchise’s very first restaurant in Malaysia. Talk about being historical!
From photos, it can be seen that the franchise had their mascots present to greet the crowd. This included the famous but not forgotten Ronald McDonald, McDonald’s mascot. Ronald McDonald was also seen parading in a themed car, waving to the crowd in another photo.

A photo of their menu back then also showed that it was notably slimmer and definitely had less products compared to today’s. But, it says a lot that most of their products have withstood the test of time. Even today, you can walk into McDonald’s and order most of their food items on the menu, with these clearly having earned McDonald’s title of “all time favourites”.
Their drinks did trip us up however. While they had typical drinks found at a fast food restaurant, McDonald’s also offered healthier options back then. You could get a cup of fresh milk then for $1.30 or a cup of pure orange juice for $1.50. We’re sure you’d get weird looks if you tried to order a glass of milk for our local McD now!

Well, the fast food industry in Malaysia has garnered even more competition since then. But, McDonald’s is still a fairly large household name, and with the items on their menu, it’s not hard to understand why. Will things change further in the future? Only time will tell!
