We usually go to a hotel to relax and get away from our daily life. As such, to a certain degree, we expect our own privacy. Regretfully, this Taiwanese couple had their privacy breached when the hotel’s housekeeping services blatantly ignored their request to be left alone!
A couple had recently booked a hotel stay in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. However, their delightful stay was rudely, and literally, interrupted when a housekeeper attempted to barge into their room. To make matters worse, they were almost caught in the nude!
The complaint first popped up on Facebook via a group. According to the poster, he and his girlfriend had opted to stay at a four-star hotel in Kaohsiung when the incident occurred. They had been half asleep and naked in bed when their room was broken into by a housekeeper.
“The housekeeper swiped the card and rushed to say: “Housekeeping”,” the post explained. “My girlfriend and I weren’t wearing any clothes when the door was opened.” The man added that he had already pressed the “do not disturb” button outside the door and had informed the hotel counter of the same. Luckily for the duo, they had double-locked the door, which ensured their privacy somewhat.
The hotel’s general manager later explained that the guests had opted to postpone their checkout time from 12pm to 2pm. However, their housekeeper was not aware of the change. “It’s our fault that the (housekeeper) didn’t notice,” he reportedly added. “They are young and new.” The housekeeper in question had only been working there for a month. However, the manager has promised to retrain them.
Still, a lawyer who weighed in on the case allegedly opines that the hotel should compensate their guests. “Unless the act is intentional, it will not constitute criminal liability,” he admitted. “But, it still constitutes a civil tort, and the hotel operator must also bear joint and several liabilities for compensation.”
Of course, netizens understandably weren’t too happy with the thought of someone barging suddenly into their room, regardless of the reason. Some claimed it was an “outrage” while others shared it had made them “uncomfortable”. A few said that privacy should be expected when the door was closed.
Well, we can’t fault them for their indignation. We’d be pretty spooked too if someone barged in on us while we were naked in bed! Hopefully, the next time the couple stays at a hotel, they’ll have a more pleasant stay.
