Malaysia Airlines Magazine Called Out For Calling Sarawak “Land Below The Wind”

Going Places by Malaysia Airlines has been a popular travel magazine and online publication that gives readers insight into the places they can consider visiting for their next holiday. While the guides and suggestions have been informative, the publication is not necessarily immune to making mistakes.

Recently, Sarawak’s first Deputy Premier (a title formerly known as deputy chief minister) Dr Sim Kui Hian posted his shocking discovery on his Facebook after opening a page to the popular travel magazine.

The Malaysian politician shared a photo of his copy of the June 2023 edition of the Going Places magazine when he noticed something wrong below the “Escape to Sarawak” title. As you may know, Sarawak is also known as the Land of the Hornbills but unfortunately, the magazine mistakenly called the state the Land Below the Wind which is actually the nickname for Sabah.

“It’s hard to be #SegulaiSejalai while Sarawakians are expected to know West Malaysia but West Malaysians are still making mistakes over some of the most basic ideas about Sarawak😝,” the 57-year-old expressed his disappointment. The post drew a lot of attention from netizens who criticised Malaysia Airlines as well as Peninsular Malaysians for their ignorance.

Shortly after the Facebook post went viral, Malaysia Airlines took down the June edition of Going Places from the official website. At the time of writing, neither the airline nor the publication has issued an official statement about the error.

Let’s hope that the error will be fixed and that nothing like this will happen again in future publications.
