Internet celebrities sometimes go dark with little fanfare. While we usually chalk it up to their lives getting busy, that was not the case for BJ Ahyeong (아영), a known live broadcaster and an influencer.
On 10th June, Cambodian news outlets reported that a body had been discovered in a pond in the country. Unfortunately, it appears the remains have been identified as AfreecaTV influencer Ahyeong. Reports claim that she had been visiting Cambodia with a friend prior to her disappearance in March for a holiday.
Ahyeong announced in March 2023 that she was suspending her broadcasting activities as she was hoping to move on from her career. Unfortunately, that was the last time anyone heard from her. The 33-year-old’s body was later discovered wrapped in a rug and dumped in a pond in Phnom Penh.
Local police confirmed the corpse’s identity as Ahyeong and began investigating the matter. Their investigation led them to a Chinese couple in their 30s who were running a local hospital in Cambodia. The duo claimed that she had passed away at the hospital on 4th June after seizing while they were treating her. Reportedly, both alleged she had been treated with a saline drip and a serum injection.
After her death, the couple reportedly wrapped Ahyeong’s body in a red rug and dumped her body at the pond in Phnom Penh. However, local media reported that there were marks on her body denoting physical assault. Reports claimed she had been beaten in the face which made it difficult to identify her facial features. Additionally, she had allegedly suffered fractures in her neck, contusions on her body, and burns.
The influencer’s exact cause of death is reportedly yet to be determined. However, Korean police have already requested a thorough investigation from the local authorities. They are also working on investigating her acquaintance, the hospital officials, and the autopsy procedure.
According to Korean news outlet, News1, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that they will be providing “consular assistance to the deceased’s family“. The couple involved in the issue will also be undergoing necessary procedures at the Phnom Penh district court.
BJ Ahyeong is best known for her beautiful looks and her work on her streaming channel. At the time of writing, she had garnered over 258,000 followers on her Instagram. Ahyeong also made headlines previously when it was revealed she had allegedly dated K-pop idol Mark from GOT7.
