Singapore-born comedian Jocelyn Chia has sparked quite a controversy recently. Not only did she offend Malaysia with an extremely insensitive joke, but the government of her home country had to step in and apologised on behalf of Singapore.
Her ‘Singapore is a first-world country’ bit also got Malaysians riled up as they believe some people from the neighbouring country have caused trouble for the people here and netizens got the receipts to prove it.

Just earlier this week, Jocelyn Chia poked fun at Malaysia for still being a developing country, claiming Singapore is more advanced and is already a first-world country. The joke got Malaysian netizens pulling out recent and old photos and videos to show that some Singaporeans’ mindsets and behaviour are far from being considered “first-world”.
“Yup, first-world country alright but then you feed off Malaysian’s subsidies,” one netizen captioned on a post showing a Singaporean man refuelling his car with the RON95 at a Petrol station in Malaysia, which is not allowed for foreign vehicles. The same sentiment has been echoed by other Malaysians who also posted similar photos and videos of Singaporean citizens filling up their cars with the RON95 petrol.
One netizen even posted a video (as seen below) of a Singaporean woman urinating in what appears to be a parking lot. Many pointed out that if Singapore truly is a first-world country, there wouldn’t be a reason for the citizens to go shopping in Johor Bahru for cheaper items and necessities.

Some clarified that while they are aware that not all Singaporeans misbehave whenever they visit the neighbouring country, they also cannot deny the fact that these incidents are a recurring thing in Malaysia, sadly. They also called out Jocelyn’s hypocrisy for glorifying Singapore but renounced her citizenship years ago. Here are what some Malaysians have to say about the ‘First-world country’ debate:
One netizen recently went viral for his Twitter thread where he roasted both Jocelyn and Singapore. Check out some of his comebacks in the thread below:

Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia and it's still bigger than Singapore. There are only 8 people in Perlis, but there's only 1 smoking corner for every 8000 Singaporeans. During peak hours, the queue for smoke breaks reaches Muar
