SG Govt Clarifies Jocelyn Chia Isn’t Singaporean Anymore; Local Celebs Share Their Thoughts

It’s time that people understand that their words carry a heavy weight and can be offensive, even if it’s just a joke. After sparking backlash with her standup routine mocking the MH370 tragedy, the Singaporean government has now issued a statement regarding comedian Jocelyn Chia.

In response to the comedian’s offensive comments, Vanu Gopala Menon, the High Commissioner of Singapore to Malaysia, said, “I am appalled by the gratuitously offensive comments made by stand-up performer Jocelyn Chia. The Singapore Government does not condone words or actions that cause harm or hurt to others and Chia, who is no longer Singaporean, does not in any way reflect our views. I sincerely apologise to all Malaysians for her hurtful remarks.”

The statement continues with the High Commissioner saying that Singapore and Malaysia share a strong relationship with deep and cross-cutting ties, adding that the comedian’s hurtful remarks undermine the close relationship between the two countries.

Aside from the High Commissioner’s statement, many Malaysians have also voiced their opinion about the comedian. Renowned local comedian, Harith Iskander, shared his thoughts in a video posted on his social media page, saying that comedians should exercise caution when touching on personal and tragic topics.

While acknowledging the freedom of expression, the comedian said, “Comedy can be a powerful tool for social commentary but it needs to be used responsibly.” He also highlighted that comedians need to be aware of the consequences of their words and believe they should strive to create a more positive comedic environment.

Influencers Jenn Chia and Ceddy Ang also spoke about the comedian through their respective social media accounts. In her Instagram post, Jenn commented, “While there is truth to “tragedy + time = comedy,” if you are not laughing with them, but at them without empathy, it’s plain bullying. And that’s not funny.” Meanwhile, Ceddy tweeted, saying, “And out of nowhere she (Jocelyn) brought up MH370, where was the punchline? What was the joke?” and condemned those in the audience who laughed along.

Of course, no one is more affected by the tragedy than the victims’ relatives. Intan Maisura Othaman, the wife of a flight attendant aboard the MH370 flight, shared her thoughts in an Instagram video, calling the routine tasteless and saying that the comedian lacked empathy for the joke.

As a comedian, Jocelyn should’ve understood the difference between funny and insensitive. She has since deactivated her social media accounts but hopefully, this serves as a reminder for her future standup routines.
