Men and women experiencing any form of sexual harassment is terrible enough but it can be even more terrifying if you’re a public figure. Celebrities have always been easy targets for these kinds of unwanted attention and assault.
Despite no longer being in the industry, a former beauty queen was recently sexually harassed online by hundreds of men after someone leaked her personal details. Here’s what happened:
An ex-beauty queen known as Lee Guan Yoke recently filed several reports after she was sexually harassed online by over 200 men, mostly from Bangladesh. According to The Star, the incident occurred after a man named Lee Fook Soon leaked her personal information during a live stream on Facebook.
It was reported that the 41-year-old was at home with her children when she received word from a friend about the live stream. “All of a sudden I received hundreds of messages and phone calls that were sexual in nature. This included messages received through my social media,” she said during a press conference at the Johor Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) state liaison committee office.
The former beauty pageant participant, who has won 10 pageants in the past, revealed that she even contemplated suicide after being overwhelmed by the situation. Disturbed by the endless lewd phone calls and messages, the professional tour guide filed two reports to the police including one to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Meanwhile, Johor MCA committee member Joan Ng Geok Yin told the media that the offender admitted to his action when contacted but claimed it to be a prank. Regardless, the man’s actions have clearly caused emotional and mental distress to the victim, as well as interfering with her career.
At the time of writing, there have been no updates from the authorities if whether or not the culprit has been apprehended. For now, let’s hope Lee Guan Yoke is doing better and that she is safe. We can only imagine the trauma she’s been through.
