Known for their affordable and delicious shawarmas that have gotten people queuing around the block, Arabian restaurant Damascus has quite a fanbase. But being popular does come with its setbacks – namely copycats.
The popular restaurant has recently claimed that another restaurant in Johor had copied their name and they are planning to take action on it. Located in Johor Bahru, the Al Damascus restaurant also specialises in Arabian food like shawarmas.
Johoreans, head down to downtown JB if you're craving for shawarma..
this shawarma shop just open today 🌯AL Damascus

As seen in the post above, the Al Damascus signboard is also reminiscent of the original restaurant so it’s no wonder people have mistaken the restaurant for the one in Bukit Bintang. Hoping to clarify the confusion, one netizen decided to message Damascus themselves to get an answer.
To their surprise, Damascus revealed that the restaurant had actually stolen their name and their legal team will be taking action against them. A quick look at Damascus’ website shows that the restaurant only has two branches – one in Sungei Wang Plaza and another by the WOLO Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.Â

Many Johoreans were excited because they initially thought the Bukit Bintang restaurant had opened a new branch in Johor so it obviously shocked many once the truth got out. What do you think about this? Was it just a coincidence or is Al Damascus trying to ride on Damascus’ popularity?
