Airbnb is a common alternative to hotels and resorts because they tend to be cheaper and include extra amenities you can’t find in hotels. However, the maintenance of these rentals isn’t always guaranteed because one woman recently shared her bad experience with a filthy Airbnb booking.
The story originated from a now-removed post on the ‘Malaysia’ subreddit where this woman wrote that her family had booked a week-long stay at one of the units at Mansion One in George Town, Penang. She explained that the reason for choosing the place was due to its decent ratings on Airbnb and its location, which is next to the private hospital where her mother had her surgery.
However, soon after her family checked in, the Reddit user realised that staying there was a big mistake. According to the woman, she was shocked to see the condition of the suite apartment and shared several instances of things that disgusted her, including hairs on sofa covers, rusty dish racks, and smelly dishcloths. Another thing that added to the netizen’s discomfort was the bedsheets that she claimed were unwashed because it left her skin feeling itchy after sleeping on them.
After posting about her stay, the woman was reached out for an interview where she spoke more about her experience. She said that she paid approximately RM1,226 for a total of 6 nights but left after only one night because she could not tolerate the condition of the apartment.
The woman had lodged a report to Airbnb about the state of the place but was ignored by the site and the host of the place. The woman said, “The host refused to refund so they (Airbnb) unilaterally cancelled my booking and only returned me RM79.90 for cancelling my booking.”
According to the customer, her family checked out early because they were worried about their mental health. She also expressed her disappointment at Airbnb for allowing unscrupulous hosts to get away with incidents like this and advised others to be wary when making bookings on Airbnb. She said that there is no way to recover your money if your booking does not turn out as advertised.
From now on, we’ll definitely be extra careful when making Airbnb bookings.
