There’s no denying that Malaysians have been feeling the pinch of the high cost of living – even Grab ride fares have increased! However, this pack of petai has got netizens wondering if prices have maybe soared a little too high.
The video was posted by TikTok user @/ladyrara017 and was apparently taken at Village Grocer Avenue K. The video showed several packs of peeled petai on a shelf and below it was the staggering price tag of RM113.90. The woman shared her disbelief in the captions, “Did I see (the price) wrongly? Petai (is) so expensive now? Inflation?”

According to the video, the petai was marked as a top-grade product and originated from Malaysia and Thailand. There was no indication of the exact weight but it was assumed to be around 100g. A quick check of the current market price shows that 100g of top-grade petai from Thailand averaged around RM13 to RM15.
The video went viral after it was posted on TikTok, surprising many netizens and eliciting many entertaining responses. Some joked that the petai is no ordinary petai, saying things like “That’s a T20 petai that was planted in Scotland” and “24k gold petai”. One user even commented that they’re going to start growing a petai tree in their backyard after seeing the price.
Having said that, the high price tag could just be a mistake as one user pointed out that the price might just be a typo and that petai usually costs around RM13 to RM18. While the supermarket has yet to clarify the price, their website does indicate that a 100g pack of peeled petai from Thailand costs around RM14.
For a second there, we thought petai had joined the ranks of wagyu beef and truffle oil on the premium range. It’s nice to know that Malaysians can still enjoy their petai without worrying about the price.
