Cancer has been and still is the leading cause of death worldwide today. Even with the advanced technology we have at this current time, many still suffer from this life-threatening disease.
On 19th May 2023, cancer has taken yet another life. After years of long battle, former TVB actress, Esther Wan (温裕红), passed away from breast cancer at the age of 54.
In 2005, Esther was diagnosed with breast cancer. After going through 6 chemotherapies and a major surgery in 2006, her cancer was actually under control. During an interview in 2020, she said that she was in good condition and that she didn’t need to rely on medication anymore, just annual check-ups. However, her condition worsened in recent months, and unfortunately she passed away shortly after.
Esther was a veteran in the entertainment industry. Having worked under TVB for 23 years, the actress has gained a lot of love and respect from the audience even though she has never played the lead role. Three years ago, she left her company with dissatisfaction after her contract was not renewed and her salary was cut in half. “Story of Zom-B”, which was released in 2021, was the adored actress’ last work.
After leaving the entertainment circle, Esther kept a low-profile and led a simple life. It was said that she retreated to the countryside where she enjoyed farming and occasionally went hiking with her friends. She spent a lot of her time with her friends until her passing.
Last year in April, a friend of hers posted a photo of the actress at a dinner party. In the photo, although Esther is seen in a headscarf and appeared to have lost weight, she was still beaming with her usual bright smile. She then expressed that she just wanted to go back being a normal person. “I do not want to be disturbed or followed since I have already left the entertainment circle.”
Having suffered for 18 years, from getting cancer treatments, mastectomy to experiencing its side effects, the beloved actress has always been optimistic in fighting the dreadful disease. Despite all her suffering, she was still grateful that she was able to lead a good life.
On May 19th, we have lost yet another well-loved actress from the Hong Kong entertainment industry. Rest in peace, Esther, your works have truly made an impact in the industry. You will forever be missed.
