If you happened to be in or passing by Mid Valley Megamall earlier today (Wednesday, 17th May), you might have noticed a huge cloud of dark smoke billowing out of the giant premises.
If you thought of the worst-case scenario, you’re weren’t wrong, as a massive fire actually did break out at the mall. Here’s what happened:
Passersby and people from nearby buildings all caught sight of the black smoke which loomed over Mid Valley City, and which they suspected was emerging from the shopping centre. As seen in the video above, the incident appears to have occurred at the mall’s loading bay.
At some point, a power outage was experienced by all major premises of Mid Valley City, including Hype’s headquarters at Northpoint Mid Valley. At the darkened Megamall, shoppers were instructed to evacuate the mall via nearby exits.
Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the flames. Based on tweets posted by witnesses, the fire was fully extinguished at around 11am.
Meanwhile, according to @KLCCC_DBKL, 2 left lanes in front of one of the mall’s exits were closed on the basis of fire engine safety, leading to massive congestion in Mid Valley City.
