We aren’t always safe when taking public transport, despite hoping against hope. Unfortunately, one netizen recently shared her experience on the MRT and regretfully, it was less than stellar thanks to her discovering a man allegedly recording her during the ride.
The lady had apparently been taking the MRT home earlier sometime this week when she noticed a man acting suspiciously across from her. Suspecting he was taking a video of her, she tried to put a stop to it. She later took to Twitter to warn others of the man, but some think her action is unwarranted.
“Whoever usually takes the MRT should be careful with this pig, recording people as he likes. From top to bottom too,” Twitter user YM Che Puan Aish said scathingly. She also included a video of the man in question, dressed in a red collared shirt and jeans while wearing a mask and a cap.
According to her, she hadn’t thought much of the man when he entered the carriage, only noting that his phone was pointed in her direction. However, after a few minutes, she realised he had taken a seat right in front of her and had his phone’s camera still pointed at her. Thinking the worst, she opted to make a scene to get him to stop the recording.
“What are you recording!? You delete it now! I’ll call the police (later)!” she yelled. The man allegedly looked scared before tapping at his phone. “Which is (why) I believe he deleted the video,” she added. When she confronted him about the recording again, he apparently responded: “What video?” It made her feel furious and annoyed, but she was very certain he had been recording her.
Netizens later apparently reprimanded Twitter user YM Che Puan Aish for publicising the matter instead of reporting it. However, she clarified that her post was not to catch the man. “If (people) see (him), then they will be aware and can scream at him (like I did) so (he) will be scared,” she stated.
Rapid KL later reached out to her via her comments section, asking for her details. They presumably hoped to make a report to take action on the matter. However, she remained skeptical. “What action can you take (with) this case? If no action (as usual), there’s no point in me giving my details. Thanks,” she said.
Another netizen however advised her to press the emergency call aboard the train or to let train staff know if such an incident happens again. “Every train has staff onboard,” they said. Others also advised her to have someone or pepper spray with her in the future. “(I’m) worried they might ‘mark’ you or chase you when there’s no one around,” one said. “Please be careful! Stay safe!”
Although we may not be entirely sure what the man was up to on the MRT, we do advise and hope public transport users will do what they can to keep themselves safe. After all, as the saying goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
