Malaysian singer-songwriter Yunalis Zarai, famously known as Yuna, has proven to the world and local fans that she’s still the same old girl with big dreams with the release of her new Malay EP “Masih Yuna”, her first Malay project since “Material” back in 2015.
The singer recently sat down with local media to talk not only about the new album but as well as the negative comments she’s been getting over the years after migrating to the United States.
In an interview with Berita Harian, Yuna revealed that while she’s found success abroad, not everyone is happy with her decisions in recent years. After releasing music in the US and collaborating with multiple international artists, the singer was apparently accused of forgetting her Malaysian roots.
“There are people back home that aren’t up to date with my progress in Los Angeles and assumed that I’ve forgotten where I came from,” said the 37-year-old. The musician also shared that some older relatives even made the assumption that she no longer does music for a living as she hasn’t released a Malay song in years.
Despite all the criticism, the “Pink Youth” artist told the local news outlet that both she and her husband Adam Sinclair found the whole situation humorous. “I’m still Malaysian and still have that Malay spirit in me. I would buy Malaysian products in bulk whenever I come across them overseas. That is how I feel closer to my homeland,” she said.
If that wasn’t convincing enough, the release of her new EP was Yuna’s way of showing that she hasn’t forgotten her origin as she still has the desire to write songs in her mother tongue. “The title ‘Masih Yuna’ itself is enough proof that I’m still the same old me, I haven’t changed,” she told Berita Harian.
In the same interview, the Kedah-born songstress shared her plans of having a baby after being inspired by her own mother as well as her sister-in-law actress Aishah Sinclair. “I genuinely enjoy watching Aishah raise her children. I want to be a mother just like her,” said the singer. We definitely look forward to the day Yuna and her husband shares the good news with the world.
