Not long ago, a beautiful kindergarten teacher posted a video of her singing to a popular children song onto Douyin (抖音). The video went viral shortly after and the teacher became a hot topic. The children song in the video is a Chinese song named “Little Garden (小小花园).”
The teacher, commonly known as Teacher Huang (黄老师), was caught up in a lot of controversies due to her going viral. There were a lot of ‘dirt’ dug up in regards of the kindergarten teacher, and rumours started to spread like fire. However, which of these rumours are true, and how many are fake?
Rumour 1: Before going viral, Teacher Huang was a contracted live streamer
Certain netizens exposed Teacher Huang to be a contracted internet celebrity before her viral video. It is rumoured that she was contracted under Joy Media (无忧传媒), a leading MCN (Multi-Channel Network) agency in China with over 10k streamers contracted under them.
According to Shang Yui News (上游新闻) though, Joy Media clarified that Teacher Huang is not a contracted artist under them. Normally, there would be a brand label on their Douyin profile for internet celebrities working under a MCN agency, yet this brand label was not found on Teacher Huang’s profile.
Rumour 2: She has quit her teaching job to stream full-time
There were a lot of screenshots circulating online on Teacher Huang’s increased amount of live broadcast and ecommerce after she went viral. Therefore, tons of rumours has been going around regarding Teacher Huang quitting her job as a kindergarten music teacher.
According to the teacher’s colleague, Teacher Huang did not quit her job and she is still working in the kindergarten. Teacher Huang also emphasised that she did not quit her job, “For the days to come, I want to use music to heal even more people.”
Rumour 3: She receives rewards worth more than 2 million for a single live stream
Other than the previous two rumours, there was also a rumour claiming that Teacher Huang received more than 2 million worth of rewards in a single live stream. After she went viral, Teacher Huang had been live streaming more often. Each of her stream averages 100k+ viewers, with the viewers gifting her tons of rewards. Professionals estimated that with the amount she is gifted in each stream, would amount to a couple of streams for other influencers.
Meanwhile, Teacher Huang has also been selling some products on her Douyin profile. Due to the school being a private kindergarten, the school authorities do not have the right to get involved with the teachers’ actions. Therefore, they are unclear about her earnings from gifts and ecommerce. Teacher Huang, on the other hand, has yet to comment on the rumour.
Rumour 4: Teaching Huang has no teaching qualifications
It is rumoured that Teacher Huang has no teaching qualifications. This, in fact, is true. According to informed sources, Teacher Huang only has a certificate from Orff Training Institute (奥尔夫培训机构). However, with this Orff music certificate, it gives her enough qualification to teach music. Even the kindergarten approved Teacher Huang of her teaching level after each annual assessment. “She is only in charge of music lessons and is a regular worker with a contract. However, she pays social insurance by herself elsewhere. She has been working (as a teacher) for 4 years.”
Rumour 5: She experienced cyberbullying
Teacher Huang is not the only kindergarten teacher to rise to fame for the children song “Little Garden”. For this reason, many netizens have been discussing widely on which of these kindergarten teachers started this trend, and which of them are prettier, etc. There were tons of comparisons, criticisms and even personal attacks and cyberbullying.
A video from Teaching Huang’s live stream showing her wiping her tears was posted online by a netizen, with its caption reading, “Moved to tears. She ‘earned’ a whole house through a single song.” Towards this video, Teaching Huang responded by saying, “Becoming popular has brought some effects into my life. To face negative claims, I will change my mindset and continue to do well in my own job.”
Rumour 6: She is suspected of copyright infringement of “Little Garden” for singing it live
Teacher Huang has been singing “Little Garden” live during her streams and receiving rewards for it, therefore, she could be sued for copyright infringement by the original creator. According to the director of a law firm, Teacher Huang is involved in commercial activities and must obtain the consent of the original creator in order to sing it on live broadcast. The law states that the songwriter can ask Teacher Huang to bear civil responsibilities like stopping the infringement, removing her online influence, making an apology, or even compensating for losses.
