Over the past few weeks, there have been quite a number of K-pop stars announcing temporary breaks from their activities in the music scene due to their poor health conditions.
As K-pop is currently at the peak of its popularity, the overwhelming amount of work has, in turn, taken a toll on the idols, both mentally and physically. This month alone, five famous idols have announced indefinite hiatus due to their concerning health conditions, causing worry among their die-hard fans.
1. IVE’s Rei (레이)
On 11th April, Starship Entertainment announced that Rei would be absent from the group’s promotion for their first album “I’ve IVE” to focus on her health. They revealed that the Japanese idol was having symptoms of heart palpitations and shortness of breath.
Rei later came forth with a handwritten letter to address the situation. According to Kpop star, she’s taking some time off to take good care of herself. So far, IVE has yet to perform their new songs, “Kitsch” and “I Am” together with Rei.
2. NCT’s Jaehyun (재현)
NCT’S sub-unit DOJAEJUNG released their first EP “Perfume” earlier on 17th April. However, SM Entertainment announced that the trio will halt all their scheduled activities after one of the members, Jaehyun, experienced symptoms of Covid-19. Thankfully the break was a short one as Jaehyun, along with Jungwoo and Doyoung, performed the song together for the first time on the Korean music show “M Countdown”. We’re glad that the idol is back safe and sound. 🙂
3. Seventeen’s Seungkwan (승관)
Seventeen came back stronger than ever with their new mini album “FML” earlier this week on 24th April. However, the boy group’s label, Pledis Entertainment, delivered some sad news regarding the participation of member Seungkwan, in their upcoming promotions. It’s revealed that the “Fighting” singer was not able to take part in the pre-recorded performance of their new song, as he was “feeling unwell.”
4. Xdinary Heroes’ Junhan (준한)
The rock band Xdinary Heroes returned with their 3rd EP “Deadlock” on 26th April. Sadly, their label, JYP Entertainment, stated that the band’s guitarist, Junhan, will be sitting out of Xdinary Heroes’ promotion for their new project. According to the statement, the 20-year-old idol was diagnosed with enteritis. “Based on the advice of health experts that he needs rest and recuperation, it has been decided that JunHan will halt his promotions temporarily, as to prioritize his recovery,” the agency wrote.
5. Red Velvet’s Joy (조이)
Last but not least, Joy from Red Velvet will be taking a break from group activities due to health reasons. According to a statement by SM Entertainment, “Joy visited the hospital after experiencing a decline in her health. After consulting with the doctor, she was advised to take some rest and receive treatment. As a result, Joy will not participate in any schedules temporarily and will instead direct her efforts into recovery.”
Previously, the company also stated that Joy would not participate in the Japanese leg of the girl group’s concert tour “R to V”, which is set to kick off next month. It’s also understood that the “Tempted” actress will also be stepping down as the host of the SBS variety show “Animal Farm”.
