(Video) “Did We Get Scammed?”: Foreign Barber In Bukit Bintang Charged UK TikTokers RM120 For A Haircut

Although we are more familiar with scammers’ tactics these days, it’s still possible to fall victim to them, especially if you’re not a local in the area. Previously, netizens pointed out to local tourists that they were scammed after being overcharged for their meal in a restaurant in Sabah since they were not familiar with the prices.

Recently, content creators Zoe and Czar suffered the same fate of being overcharged for a haircut by another foreigner. The couple recently posted a video on their TikTok channel to share that they suspected that they’ve been scammed by a foreign hairdresser in Bukit Bintang. “Do you also think RM120 is far too much for a trim in Malaysia?” they captioned the video.

What do you think? Do you also think 120 ringgit is far too much for a trim in a local barber shop in Kuala lumpur? First time this has happened to us in Malaysia 🇲🇾 #malaysia #kualalumpur #kualalumpurmalaysia #malaysiatiktok

In the video posted, the YouTubers stopped by a barbershop as Czar wanted to get a haircut which, according to the signboard, should cost about RM19 minimum. Unfortunately, after he was done, the foreign barber charged the two tourists RM120 for the haircut and facial trim. Suspecting that they were being scammed, the travellers asked two locals in the area about the actual price for a haircut.

They then confronted the barber for overcharging them. The foreign hairdresser can be heard defending himself by saying that locals do not need to pay tax for haircuts and that they’d usually go for cheaper haircuts at other establishments. Frustrated, the TikTokers complained that they shouldn’t be charged that much just because they were tourists.

Malaysian netizens responded to the viral video (which has reached over 641k views at the time of writing) with many of them agreeing that they had been cheated by the foreign barber. Some advised the duo to file a police report and expose the name of the barbershop. After being flooded with comments, Zoe posted a follow-up video to properly explain what happened in full detail.

According to her, the barber was being suspiciously friendly; asking them about the cost of living in Europe. “Usually, people would give up whenever we confront them for overcharging us but this guy was not backing down. He started going on about how foreigners need to pay tax while locals don’t “, she said. The UK woman also claimed that there was another barber trying to charge another foreigner RM250.

Luckily for the two, they didn’t pay the RM120 but they still, however, had to pay a lot of money for a simple cut. Unfortunately, the travelling TikTokers did not had time to file a police report against the foreign barber that scammed them as they had already left for Penang by the time the second video was posted.
