Horror can come in all shapes and sizes, but it’s only natural to feel drained when you’ve seen the same plot, the same monsters, and even the same actors over and over again. So if you’re looking for something new without spending a fortune on tickets and popcorn, maybe you should start exploring the weird side of YouTube.
Unlike typical movies, these channels do not follow the traditional structure you see in movies, leading into some creative but also dark stories that you may or may not enjoy. It gets pretty dark, to the point that we do have to leave a warning sign as it gets a little too real, crossing a point that no other film has crossed before.
Still daring to know? Well, here are 5 horror channels that will make you hide under the covers.
_ Boisvert
If you remember the 2008 cartoon called Chowder, the most notable part of the entire series is how the show blends different animations, like 2D, 3D, and even live action puppets. Think of that, but imagine it as an unhinged horror show that is _ Boisvert. This indie horror series has a sound design that is so original it’s creepy. The animation used can only be described as avant-garde, featuring different styles and filmmaking techniques, making something new and original but also alien and terrifying.
It explores a person in isolation, trapped during the COVID lockdowns, and how it takes a toll on the unnamed protagonist. Soon, images and entities begin appearing out of nowhere, making him question his entire being. However, even after the lockdown, the damage is done. Don’t worry though, as this series has a happy ending, but reaching it is a slow process, much like healing in real life. The series is still continually uploading more and more videos for us to watch, and what happens next is anyone’s guess.
The Backrooms
This series is perhaps the most recognisable horror series to date, as it took an eerie image from 4chan and gave it life on the YouTube channel Kane Pixels. For those unfamiliar with it, The Backrooms is a space between dimensions where people mysteriously “fall” out of reality and mysteriously find themselves there. The space known as The Backroom is not dormant, however, as it is filled with creatures that kill for no real reason.
Though the original image and concept have floated around the internet since 2019, the channel is pretty new, having just recently reached its one year mark, and is still developing. We horror fans just can’t wait to see what creepypasta-esque creations we will see next.
Crypt TV
If you are not a fan of “low-budget,” “indie,” or “found footage” types of horror and you’re looking for something that is better in terms of quality, then we got you there as well. Crypt TV is essentially the Marvel Cinematic Universe for YouTube horror shows, as the channel has original monsters and lore that fit their kind of horror. This channel does not shy away from gore and violence, something you would commonly see in a high-budget movie.
Each upload is a mini horror movie, complete with practical effects and flooded with genuine scares, not the cheap ones that have recently flooded all forms of horror media. It’s a breath of fresh air if you love horror but don’t like what’s on the market right now. What makes this channel so interesting is that they created a shared universe where all their monsters can coexist and may even unite their years-old series together. And when that happens, we will be ready with popcorn in hand.
The Mandela Catalogue
Be careful who you pray to; next thing you know, a false god might have heard you. Mandela Catalogue is an eerie horror series that takes the familiar and safe stories of the Christian Bible and then warps them into something terrifying. This indie horror show depicts two opposing factions: an entity known as Gabriel that takes people and then replaces them with doppelgangers known as alternates, and a person on TV who has abducted over 3,000 children and is known as The Intruder.
Information about the series is purposefully kept vague, but instead of deterring people, it invites us to stick around and solve the mystery. And what lures us even more is the potential of a global takeover and a subsequent war where the battlefield is on earth.
Hiimmarymary
Perhaps the most terrifying series of them all is about a girl who is stuck inside her house. The YouTube channel “hiimmarymary” is a terrifying and surreal metaphor for the human mind, and one you should not watch in the dead of night. This psychological horror story follows a girl named Mary who is stuck alone in her house, or at least a copy of it. This house is a host to supernatural activities; nothing happens during the day, but she is terrorised by all sorts of monsters at night.
This horror series goes deep into a dark rabbit hole, exploring all sorts of tragedies, but unlike the rest of the shows on this list, the audience can influence the ending. Mary has a Twitter page and blog where she is frequently seen posting hints about the monsters and other things. The series has officially ended, and whether she has reached a happy conclusion or not is up for you to find out.
