Having a work-life balance is necessary in order to take care of both your physical and mental health. However, not everyone can afford this lifestyle as many have worked multiple jobs but are still only making ends meet. Some worked tirelessly for years until they could finally afford to have a work-life balance.
In a recent episode of the “Jom Sembang” podcast hosted by actress Amelia Henderson, guest Janna Nick shared her opinions on those who want to have a work-life balance. As seen in the excerpt below, the actress was seen laughing before saying, “I noticed today’s generation wants to have a work-life balance. I’m sorry but I only managed to afford that now at 28.”

The “Mentari Setia” singer, who used to work as a sales girl at Setapak Central at 16, then elaborated that she’s now financially secure after working hard for years which allowed her to finally afford the work-life balance lifestyle. “If you still haven’t achieved the first goal in your life, you can forget about work-life balance unless your parents are rich,” she added. Amelia can be seen agreeing with her guest about the topic.
The tweet has since reached over 5.5 million views, 3k quotes, and 1.3k likes. Although some netizens agreed with the “Secret Admirer” star’s statement, most were offended as they interpreted the conversation, especially the laughing part, as though the two celebs were looking down or undermining people who want to have a work-life balance.
Amelia responded to the criticism by clarifying that Janna was not laughing at today’s generation of people as she was actually referring to herself. “She’s laughing because only she knows how much WORK she had to put in to achieve her own work-life balance. What she’s saying is from the viewpoint and is directed to people whose goals are financial, which is completely valid as well,” the “Pulau” star tweeted.
She then shared her opinion that those who are struggling financially should prioritise taking care of themselves and their family before anything, which would mean they’d need to work twice as hard in order to afford a more comfortable life. The influencer also agreed with netizens that there should be better salaries to help cope with inflation and the rising costs of living.m
At the time of writing, Janna has yet to respond to the criticism thrown at her. For your information, in the same episode, the 28-year-old shared how she used to earn around RM700 a month as a salesgirl and gave most of the money to her mother. She also admitted that she was unapologetic for working at an early point in her career as she strove to be financially independent.
What do you think of the situation? Was it all just a huge misunderstanding? Watch the full episode yourself and share your thoughts:
