“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” or so the saying goes. However, this still doesn’t stop others from freely commenting on someone’s appearances. And recently, Hong Kong actress Gillian Chung (鍾欣潼) has been getting a lot of flak for her looks.
Gillian may be best known for the divorce drama she was embroiled in after her husband Michael Lai (賴弘國) publicised their separation. However, since then, Gillian has been steadily focused on her career. Unfortunately, netizens have been more focused on Gillian’s appearance, specifically her body size and her height!
The 42-year-old’s struggle with her weight has allegedly been a long-time problem. In fact, many have noted that Gillian gained weight some time last year before loosing it again. Curiously enough, some claim the weight gain was because Gillian was pregnant with twins, whom she had with Chinese rapper Qin Fen (秦奋).
However, others alleged Gillian’s weight gain had actually been for a role. Media reports supposedly recorded Gillian saying: “I am so happy (I’m) able to challenge different things, and I like to eat. This time, I can gain weight justifiably.” A few pointed out that Gillian had started gaining weight when she was filming “Green Snake: The Fate of Reunion (青蛇: 前缘)”. As such, she had no time for a pregnancy.
Netizens also recently criticised Gillian for looking short during the Shanghai Fashion Week on 31st March. Despite her dressing to the nines, people were more distracted by her height, claiming she looked like a dwarf. But, some attributed her shrunken stature to the dress she was wearing.
Gillian’s dress was a simple, strapless one piece dress with a short top and a long skirt. Although it showcased Gillian’s curves well, it had the unfortunate effect of making her legs look short. As such, netizens claimed, she looked much shorter in photos. One netizen reportedly commented: “Just take a photo of (her) face, don’t comment (on her looking) ‘short’.”
Gillian’s friend, Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍), once claimed Gillian’s weight gain and loss was due to a hormonal imbalance. But she also clarified then that Gillian was “happy and healthy”. Well, if there’s one thing to take away from all this, we suppose it would be: if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.
