Driving cars using autopilot is a very hot topic right now. Wondering why? Well, it may have something to do with local influencer and content creator Gatita Yan (Tong Lee Yan). Just yesterday (29th March), Gatita showed her boyfriend Tay Wee Shen (郑伟盛) using autopilot to drive his car while he slept.
Well, that apparently got them in trouble as the police are currently looking for them. With all the hullabaloo, many are now wondering if driving using autopilot is actually allowed. As it turns out, it is! But, with two definite conditions.
As far as anyone knows, Gatita and Wee Shen are currently in Ipoh having a romantic getaway. The last thing Gatita uploaded on her Instagram Story showed the couple at a hot springs retreat, confirming that they are still in Ipoh. Her update was surprising as the police in Ipoh had already stated they would detain the couple if they found them in the state.
Police have also confirmed that they will be issuing a summon for Wee Shen. However, it isn’t because he used autopilot to drive his car. “Drivers can (use) the autopilot function to drive, but they cannot sleep while driving,” Perak’s Police Chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri clarified. “And, their hands must be on the steering wheel to ensure safety.”
Mohd Yusri added that napping and not having your hands on the wheel while driving are dangerous acts and are considered illegal. As such, police can and will investigate such matters under Section 10 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Well, no one is currently certain of where Gatita and Wee Shen are. But, we do hope they are driving safely if they are on the road again!
