Most people think cosplaying, aka dressing up as a fictional character, is a simple hobby. However, those who are familiar with the craft will know; it is expensive, difficult but very, very worthwhile. Don’t believe us? Just ask famous local cosplayer and model, Hakken (八犬) otherwise known as _hakkencoser_.
Known for their impeccable and detailed work, Sarawak-born Hakken has been dominating the cosplayer scene. However, it does make one wonder. What exactly is it about Hakken’s work that makes them stand out? Well, the professional cosplayer recently shared what drives their work and why they aim for perfection every single time.

For those not in the know, Hakken’s fame isn’t limited to the local scene. In fact, they were recently selected as a Tokyo Tourism Ambassador! But, it’s clear to see why they were awarded this honour. In each and every photo of their cosplays, Hakken’s dedication to the character and its origin shines through. With the right makeup, clothes and shooting location, Hakken truly manages to make one delight in the visual of the character.
However, it seems Hakken has had years to hone his craft. They apparently started watching anime in elementary school, which later led to them discovering cosplay. “It was like (seeing) a character I love come to life! So, I wanted to try it out,” Hakken reportedly said. At age 13, Hakken cosplayed their then-favourite character, Uchiha Itachi from “Naruto” for the first time! But, Hakken admitted their first cosplay was rather unsatisfactory.
While cosplay had initially started off an a minor interest for them, Hakken soon turned it into a craft. They spent time learning makeup skills and fashion design, all to improve their cosplays. But, what truly made their cosplays extraordinary was this truth: “Cosplay isn’t about (real people) dressing up like anime characters, but also bringing them to life so they (are alive) in reality.”

Perfection became a common pursuit in every cosplay Hakken did. They focused on ensuring the makeup was right, the clothes were accurate and of course, the scenery fit the character. In fact, Hakken recalled working with their team to catch the sunrise in Italy when they were photographing for characters from the anime “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind”. It apparently took several days, but Hakken felt it was well worth it.
“I hope that when I look back on my work many years later, I can still be proud,” Hakken stated. “So, I have also set a goal for myself; that is, (for) every character and work, (I) must spare no effort to be the best.” Still, Hakken has encouraged other cosplayers to be mindful of their health and finances while perfecting their own art.

As for those who don’t appreciate the craft, Hakken had this to say: “(Even) if you can’t fully (understand) it, at the very least, don’t look at cosplayers strangely.” But, on the flipside, it certainly seems as though cosplaying is picking up in Malaysia, with many also reaching out to Hakken for their events.
Well, it’s certainly inspiring to see Hakken’s dedication to their craft! It’s also amazing that it has grown from an interest to a full-blown career for them. We hope to see more from Hakken soon!
