Scammers have been on the rise in recent years. It isn’t uncommon to hear people complaining about scam calls, scam texts and more. However, people have been coming up with various ways to deal with scam calls. In fact, local YouTuber Chan Phei Yong (陈培永) recently showed us how he did it!
Phei Yong shared on his Instagram that a colleague of his received a scam call yesterday (6th March). He then took a video of himself taking the call and how he dealt with the scammer. Needless to say, he managed to get the scammer to hang up on him instead.

From the video, it seemed as though they had called the scammer back after missing his call the first time. After exchanging some pleasantries, the scammer then asked Phei Yong, “Do you know me?” Phei Yong was quick to act, even gifting the scammer the name “Weng Gor”. The scammer later told Phei Yong he had lost his mobile phone and wallet at a teahouse. As such, he had allegedly lost Phei Yong’s contact.
Phei Yong played along with the scammer and mentioned their ‘friends’ had planned a meet up. However, the scammer claimed he would not be available. He supposedly needed to get his IC and bank card reissued. “Just get Ah Heong to do it,” Phei Yong told him. “He’s (working) in a government department.” Phei Yong continued to insist on getting the scammer’s IC and bank card number to avoid the waiting time and queue.
“I’ll help you settle (it),” he promised. “You give me the number so I can cheat (your) money.” The scammer tried to protest it, but Phei Yong continued his ruse. “Just give me the numbers,” Phei Yong said. “We’ve been talking for about three minutes so we can track your address already—” The scammer then quickly hung up the call making Phei Yong burst into laughter.

He cheekily finished off his scammer saga by directing a video to the police. “Ah Weng Gor called me earlier, here is his phone number. Please give him a call or Whatsapp him. Let him know that Ah Heong is willing to help with his IC. So he doesn’t need to line up for it,” Phei Yong said solemnly.

The local YouTuber later shared that this was a usual modus operandi for scammers. Apparently, they will call once to form a relationship with you, a second time to strengthen the bond, and a third to start scamming. Phei Yong also warned others to be careful of such tricks.
