You’ve probably received one of those spam messages from scam bots claiming they are old coin/money collectors. It may come as a surprise to some but there are actual people out there who collect these relics. These collectors are more than willing to pay a fortune for certain rare items and that includes old currencies.
Most would collect coins or money that is no longer being used for exchange in today’s market. But how would you react if someone were to offer you RM1000 in excange for a RM1 note that hasn’t even gotten out of date yet?

A man who goes by Ah Kai (or @wanglamamalaysia on TikTok) regularly posts about his large collection of old Malaysian currencies on his channel. Scrolling through his TikTok, we can see that most of the coins and ringgit notes he collects are pretty much, what many would consider, ancient. However, his recent purchase caught the attention of netizens as he paid RM1K in cash for a still valid and usable RM1 note.
In the video above, the content creator bought the RM1 note from a seller name John. The recent purchase went viral with now reaching over 3.5 million views on TikTok. Netizens were flabbergasted that the collector was willing to pay that much for a RM1 note. Many questioned his reason for doing so but don’t worry, the old currency enthusiast was not scammed.

Speaking to mStar, the numismatists clarified that he did not buy the RM1 note for the sole reason that it was old. “That RM1 was special because its serial number only consists of the number 8, which is extremely rare. That is why I paid that amount for the note,” he said. He added that other collectors or shops would only pay RM300 – RM700 at most for the RM1 note but he was willing to pay for what it’s actually worth.

Ah Kai told mStar that he started collecting old currencies at a very young age, adding that he’s always been interested in Malaysian history. “It all started as a hobby but it officially became a business in 2012,” said the Penang-born man.
As seen in the video below, the collector is also interested in old currencies from Singapore and China. So if you have some old cash or coins that you want to give away, why not try dropping Ah Kai a DM?
