Why Being The Black Sheep In Your Family Isn’t A Bad Thing (Really!)

If you’re here, you probably consider yourself your family’s black sheep. When we think of the term “black sheep,” we automatically picture people who are generally ostracized and not accepted by their families. That’s because they’re the ones who go against the norms, the ones who stand out from the flock, the ones considered undervalued. Well, it’s 2023 and it’s time that we embrace being the black sheep.

While most people believe that being the family’s black sheep is a shameful thing, we say NO! Being the black sheep in your family might be the biggest blessing you’ve ever had. Of course, we all want to feel like we belong somewhere. However, black sheep may only experience this sense of belonging if they give up something, such as their love of music. Some may regard it as a selfless act, but it will just leave a void in their soul.

It’s past time for us to recognize that our life’s passion is what defines and colours us. And if that means being the family’s black sheep, then so be it. Because being the black sheep isn’t as horrible as society makes it out to be. Here’s why:

You’re Finally Free

Being the black sheep means that you’re free from the expectations that were set by your family. It also means that being accepted by your family is not your top priority in life anymore. You prioritize doing whatever that makes you happy, even if it means your family disapproves of your decisions. While it can be painful not having your families’ full support, the friends and community you’ve made will bring you fulfillment as they fully support the authentic you.

You’ve Shown Bravery

It might be daunting to want to pursue something that your family may not approve of. However, the ability to stand up for what you believe in and refuse to submit to whatever expectations your family has placed on you demonstrates bravery. If you can endure your family’s criticisms and contempt, you’re essentially prepared to confront life’s challenges. Even in the most difficult situations, your capacity to make a stand for what you believe in will keep you going.

You Recognize Boundaries

Being the black sheep also implies that you are often surrounded by negativity in your life. It clearly signifies you’re continuously mocked, criticised, and regarded as the family’s letdown. Staying with them requires you to put up with a lot of their scorn, but leaving them would be far more difficult. Which is why, establishing boundaries should provide you with some relief. If the subject of you comes up unexpectedly, simply excuse yourself and go.

You’re The Most Unique Out Of All

Having a passion for something that your family does not understand simply suggests that they do not share that many interests with you. It doesn’t imply you’re an oddball; it just shows that you’re not scared to be yourself in front of your family. Your family may be afraid of how society would regard them, which explains their closed-mindedness. However, it’s not that you don’t care what society thinks of you; it’s simply that you’d rather have peace of mind while doing what you love than conform to whatever your family thinks you should be.

Are you considered to be the black sheep in your family? If so, tell us how your story went.
