Huat-ah! Chinese New Year festivities are still going strong, and countless food and beverage outlets have been introducing specially-curated menus to usher in the Year of the Rabbit – including The Chicken Rice Shop (TCRS)! The Ayam Hot-Ah Chicken, which is rich in flavour and represents the warmth of the Chinese New Year celebration, has been added to TCRS’ new menu this season.
Created using a mixture of delicious, spicy gravy; paired with fried tofu; and topped with spring onions, this dish will undoubtedly make you go “Hot-Ah! Whether you’re dining in alone, or sharing the flavours with family and friends, TCRS’ new menu caters to your preferences, with three different sets to choose from for varying groups. We recently had a taste of the new menu, and here’s what we think:
We started with the Berry Jelly Fizz, a refreshing soft drink mixed with cocktail fruits and syrup. It’s sweet and really fruity, and compliments the flavours of the meal nicely. Next up, we were served a variety of entrées, including Nyonya Pai Tee, Spicy Savoury Ladies’ Fingers, Penang Famous Chicken Rolls, and Penang Rojak. All the entrées were really good, but we had two favourites. One was the Nyonya Pai Tee, a thin and crispy pastry tart shell filled with shredded Chinese turnips, and a sweet mixture of thinly-sliced vegetables, served with sweet, chilly dipping sauce. We really like the crispy, cute tart shell and the filling is amazing. It’s so convenient to eat – and very addictive too. Another favourite is the Spicy Savoury Ladies’ Fingers. The chili oil-topped ladies fingers are perfectly-cooked and super crunchy – but they could be a little too hot for those who can’t tolerate spiciness.

Next, we dove into three types of TCRS’ signature chicken: Roasted Chicken, Steam Chicken and Prime Honey BBQ Chicken. Both the roasted and steam chickens were served with soy sauce – but we loved the roasted chicken more because of the crispy skin. The Prime Honey BBQ Chicken is a must-try whenever you visit TCRS! It has a sweet and smoky tasty which makes it extra delicious when paired with Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Now here comes the highlight of the day – Ayam Hot-Ah. From the looks (and even smell) of it, we can tell it’s definitely spicy. The chicken is topped with gravy that looks so bold and red, it’s amazing! If you can’t tolerate spice, you might wanna keep a few drinks at hand. We love how tender and flavourful the chicken is; and how yummy the chunks of tofu are. But the spiciness is a bit too much for us. Taste-wise, it’s sweet, but really spicy.

Despite being a fiery dish, you should try the Ayam Hot-Ah at least once. TCRS has three sets of dishes and ala carte offerings, as follows:
