We usually want what’s best for our family. This is especially true for our parents. As such, we, as children, will normally try to repay our parents for bringing us up and sacrificing for us. It could be something as small as helping out when necessary. Or it could be a big gesture, like purchasing a car worth more than RM300,000!
Dato’ Sri Ho Leng Wei (何连威), chairman of CY Group and Honorary President of the Malaysian Plastics Recycling Association (MPRA) recently celebrated his dad’s 70th birthday. To surprise his dad, Dato’ Sri Ho Leng Wei gifted his father, 何发 (transliteration: Ho Fat), a Volvo XC60 SUV!
Five years ago, during Ho Fat’s 65th birthday, Leng Wei presented his dad with a Toyota Fortuner. Curiously enough, Leng Wei later shared that he had already planned on getting his father another car for his 70th birthday at that time. But, he only settled on getting the XC60 SUV roughly eight months ago. Leng Wei added he had chosen the car because it was sturdy. This would also ease his worries when his father drove.
Previously, Ho Fat had apparently gone to Kuala Lumpur to pick up the Toyota Fortuna. But this time, Leng Wei had the car brought to his dad’s birthday party at their house. It certainly startled Ho Fat when it rolled up to his front porch in a giant, lit up box. At that time, Ho Fat had been about to set off fireworks as a sideshow. He hadn’t been expecting a new car.

Of course, everyone was eager to watch Ho Fat try out his new car. They managed to get it out of its box and Ho Fat was all ready to take it for a test drive when he realised something. “How do I (drive) it?” he asked. His sudden statement made the crowd laugh. Ho Fat later told the media present that he was not familiar with handling the car and needed time to get used to it.
Notably enough, the XC60 SUV’s number plate was CY 112, similar to Ho Fat’s previous car. Ho Fat explained that that CY stood for the name of his son’s company while 112 was his favourite number. The father and son duo are certainly sentimental.
Well, that’s one way to show love to your dad! Who knows, Leng Wei might gift his dad another car in a couple of years. In the meantime, we too would like to wish Mr. Ho a happy belated birthday!
