Chinese New Year, one of Malaysia’s most widely-celebrated festivals, is waiting in the wings. The signs of it are not only in the homes of Malaysians nationwide, but shopping centres too, which are awash in Year of the Rabbit decor, activities and overall vibes. It’s no secret that malls go above and beyond during Malaysian festivities – it’s one way to instill excitement in appreciative shoppers.
We dropped, no hopped, by two malls in the Klang Valley – MyTOWNKL Shopping Center and Sungei Wang Plaza – to join in their CNY campaign launches, and boy did we have fun! Check out what these malls have in store for shoppers – from decorations to Lunar New Year events!
MyTOWN Shopping Center
As the Year of the Rabbit approaches, MyTOWNKL invites all to join in the festivities! This year’s MyTOWNKL Lunar New Year theme is Celebrating Luck & ‘Tùgetherness,’ with ‘Tùgetherness’ being a creative word play in which the ‘Tù’ signifies ‘rabbit’ in Chinese. This year’s theme was chosen with the aim of encouraging warm fellowship among family members and providing an ideal opportunity to reestablish bonds and camaraderie, especially in a place like MyTOWNKL.
The mall went above and beyond for this year’s Chinese New Year decorating in order to captivate its visitors and instill the spirit of this auspicious festival in them. At its Central Town, shoppers will be greeted by a beautiful, 20-foot lantern, covered with flowering peonies; and brilliant cherry blossoms. The Lunar New Year Fair, popularly known as the “Flower Market,” will be held in the same location, and offer an array of interesting merchandise, ranging from gifts by Famous Amos to women’s trendy handbags by Christy Ng.
Speaking of Christy Ng, MyTOWNKL is awarding consumers with Christy Ng’s Fillmore Monogram Canvas Tote as part of a sustainable campaign embracing eco-friendly methods. This eco-friendly tote bag is available in two lovely colours: dusty pink and beige. It is meticulously created by trained craftsmen and embroidered with both MyTOWNKL and Christy Ng’s brand names on either side of the bag. To receive MyTOWNKL’s version of Christy Ng’s Fillmore Monogram Canvas Tote, luxury bath towel, and limited-edition red package, MyTOWNKL app users must have a minimum of 88 points – but those without the app must spend a minimum of RM138 at MyTOWNKL with a maximum of 3 combined receipts.
At Town Park, you’ll discover a display of all 12 Chinese zodiac animals, each of which is related with a personality attribute, making it fun to figure out what your sign is, based on your birth year. From now to January 29, 2023, there will be a plethora of exciting activities for visitors – Kwong Ngai’s Lion Dance, The Martial Art of Wushu, and UCSI University’s Contemporary Dance performances on weekends and public holidays will be among them.
Additionally, you can commemorate the auspicious year with MyTOWNKL’s customised “Grab Lucky Gold Ingots” online game. Collect as many gold ingots as possible within the time limit to win an amazing tenant’s cash coupon.

Sungei Wang Plaza
The iconic Sungei Wang Plaza is not to be eclipsed this Chinese New Year, as it goes all-out to launch its “Prosperous Year of Reunion”. The mall has been turned into an Instagram-worthy photo and video-taking location, with Red Chinese Lanterns, Cherry Blossom Trees, and wavy red fabric draped and dispersed throughout the premises. The beautifully-lit Sungei Wang Walk, with over 100 lanterns and a 16 foot-tall Cherry Blossoms Tree at the Main Entrance is undoubtedly the centrepiece of Sungei Wang Plaza’s Chinese New Year décor.
The mall has prepared an array of activities for guests to enjoy this Chinese New Year, from shopping at the Chinese New Year Marketplace at Centre Court, to witnessing live performances such as the Sound of Ukulele by Persatuan Pencinta Muzik Ukulele Malaysia (PPMUM), a Lion Dance Performance, the MK Teen Fashion Show, and Movekids CNY Fashion Night.
Special visits by a variety of artists will liven up your weekends at Sungei Wang Plaza, including by Angeline, Nick & Stella, Crystal Ong, and many more!
