Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna is living proof that local talents can achieve their dreams abroad. Although the journey has not been easy for her, the dedication, patience, and perseverance have helped her become a well-known singer worldwide.

Speaking of journey, have you ever wondered what it must’ve been like for her when she first started out in her career in Kuala Lumpur? A young girl with big dreams surely knows what she wants and what is needed in order for her to progress in her music career. The musician is spilling some tea about how this KL label executive probably regretted their decision.

Users of music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are currently churning out the platforms’ most streamed songs and artists of the year. One tap away and you’d know just how much people have listened to a specific artist. Our girl Yuna recently shared on her IG story that she’s achieved over 70 million plays on Apple Music in the US!

To further flex her milestone (as she should), the singer also captioned her story with a past incident with a Malaysian label executive when she was 21 years old. According to the 36-year-old, she’d only agree to sign with the unnamed label if they promise to push her English songs internationally to which they replied, “No one will listen to your English music, why would they listen to an English song made by an artist from Malaysia?”.

Looks like the jokes on them as Yuna has become a global artist thanks to both her Malay and English songs. The IG story was reposted on Twitter where many netizens showed support for the “Castaway” songstress and thanked her for being an inspiration to aspiring musicians in Malaysia.

Yuna replied to one tweet by a netizen who thanked her for her contribution to music and proving that art by Malaysians can be appreciated internationally. “🙏🏽✨ I hope young Malaysian artists keep fighting for their art and creative freedom despite what they are pressured to do. To be fair I now meet more label execs who are doing things differently and giving their artists the right support❤️,” she tweeted.

Congratulations to Yuna for all her achievements and milestones and may her career reach greater heights in the future!
