When it comes to internet celebrities and the like, we often feel that life is pretty good for them. After all, they usually have extravagant displays of their branded goods, luxury cars and houses. However, no one really knows what it took for them to get there.
Recently, a netizen claimed that internet celebrities are usually from good and wealthy families. Hence, their ability to live a lavish lifestyle. However, local influencer and internet personality Qiu Wen (秋雯) disagrees. After all, while she may live an envious lifestyle now, she built her reputation from the ground up!
Qiu Wen maintains that she has earned each and every achievement in life. That includes all her miles stones, such as her own branded car with a personal driver, her dream home and even travelling to Switzerland via first class flight! After all, she wasn’t born with a silver spoon in her mouth. As such, a few off-handed remarks recently prompted Qiu Wen to respond. Especially after they claimed that internet celebrities are only well off because of their wealthy families.
It started when one netizen claimed you needed to have a good family background to be an internet celebrity. “(If you) don’t (have to) worry about your parents’ living expenses and your own, then you can try to (be one),” they added. Another responded, saying: “It’s true that almost every internet celebrity is (a rich child). (They) obviously have never suffered any hardships. Yet, they still complaint that they have and (claim their) achievements are all earned by themselves (with) “hard” (work).”
But, Qiu Wen disagreed. “Becoming an internet celebrity 5-6 years ago was (considered) shameful,” she stated via her Instagram Story. “At that time, very few people posted photos on the internet. Your friends and family (would) think you were strange for always (taking) photo ops, because at that time, internet celebrities did not have the income that is now recognised.” She added that there was also a stigma of thinking it was not a ‘real job’. “People around you would think you weren’t working and were (simply) taking photos every day,” Qiu Wen said.
To Qiu Wen, being an internet celebrity had simply been an opportunity for her to earn money. “At that time, people who became internet celebrities (did so) because their families were poor,” she explained. “(They would) start as models, before gradually becoming internet celebrities. At least, (it was for) me and the people around me?” Qiu Wen added being an internet celebrity was more common now thanks to developing technology. As such, she felt being an internet celebrity was much easier now as all one had to do was take plenty of photos and videos.
Money has always been tight for Qiu Wen. Previously, she shared how she would only spend RM3 to eat in an effort to save her cash. But now, she can afford to be a little more lavish. In fact, one of her cherished milestones in life was getting her own house. It was easy to see why, especially after Qiu Wen shared her previous living spaces.
“(Getting my own house) wasn’t easy to come by. (But), I am very fortunate that my experience has made me cherish everything I have now. Every brick and tile is a trace of a struggle,” she said. “Maybe someone else was born in Rome. But (if) we work hard to make money, we can go to Rome by plane. Only if you want to or have to. I had to, so I did it.” Qiu Wen ended her thoughts by saying: “Although we can’t decide where we are born, we can decide where we end up. I know that my end is not here, because I will continued to strive to have a happy and regret-free life.”
Perhaps some have been fortunate enough to be born into wealthy families. However, this doesn’t mean we should dismiss others’ hard work either. On our end, we hope to see Qiu Wen continue to achieve her goals. Like she said, her journey isn’t over yet!
