Moving to an entirely new country can be a gamble. After all, while some might love the adventure it brings, others might still remain homesick for their home country. However, that is not the case for this family from Hong Kong.

YouTube channel “MangoHK大马狮家” is run by a family who migrated to Malaysia from Hong Kong. They have been living here for over three years and have been busy exploring the country. But, they recently shared that they considered moving back to Hong Kong… only to realise they had plenty of reasons to stay in Malaysia!

The Hong Kong government announced that they were lifting compulsory quarantine measures at the end of September. That, of course, means that it would be easier to enter Hong Kong. As such, it got the father thinking. “We’ve been in Malaysia for a while, do you think we can still live in Hong Kong?” he asked the family in a video.

The sons were quick to say no, with the elder elaborating, saying that academics could be a problem. “I’m not very young, so switching schools could be difficult,” he stated. For the mom, she felt they had comfortable with their way of living in Malaysia, so moving back to Hong Kong could be difficult.

As for the father himself, he admitted feeling reluctant to return to Hong Kong’s “depressing environment“. “Needing to work day and night, (with its) narrow spaces and the bustling (city), (it makes me) unwilling to return,” he shared.

In fact, the family stated they were very happy living in Malaysia. They agreed that the various food, places to travel to and good weather made it a worthwhile place to stay. Additionally, the father pointed out that travel was cheap as the oil prices were more affordable, compared to Singapore and the US.

As for the kids, they felt studying in Malaysia was a good thing. “I think (going back to Hong Kong) isn’t good,” the youngest son said. He pointed out that his Mandarin wasn’t good enough to keep up in Hong Kong. “I’m used to speaking English in school, (so) it’s difficult to get used to that in Hong Kong,” he added.

The family also appreciated being able to learn more about different ethnicities and their culture. In fact, the mother mentioned she was happy her kids could learn more languages. However, they were also impressed that the local Chinese were maintaining their culture. “It doesn’t feel like (we’re) overseas,” the father added. “So, our children will still have the Chinese culture instilled in them.”

Malaysian fans were quick to leave comments under the video. Several thanked them for highlighting what made Malaysia beautiful. Others simply expressed their happiness at seeing the family find joy in Malaysia. In fact, a few even recommended more places for them to travel to in Malaysia!

Well, some of us might have a different view of the country sometimes. But, there’s no denying that this family from Hong Kong is definitely living their best lives here. We too hope they’ll continue to enjoy themselves here in Malaysia!
