Curious to know how much waiters in fine dining restaurants are getting paid? According to a report by Murai, a Twitter user recently shined a spotlight on how much a famous bar and grill restaurant in KL pay their staffs.
In case you’re curious, the restaurant officially opened its doors in Sunway Resort back in June. One of the most famous menu offered by the restaurant would be the Classic Beef Wellington dish. Furthermore, it’s also a well-known fact that the fancy restaurant is owned by a renowned British chef.
For context, the Twitter user uploaded a video taken from social media influencer Ivor Xian Z’s post on her TikTok. She shared with her followers her first-time dining in at the restaurant recently. Among the food that she and her friends tried include the famous Wellington beef slice, the Wagyu burger, Tortellini, and also a chocolate tart dessert worth RM65.
It’s understood that Ivor and her friends paid over RM 250 each for their orders. “The (restaurant’s name) in Malaysia charges RM300 per slice of beef Wellington, RM40 for mashed potatoes, and RM36 per bottle of water, but they only pay their waitstaff RM1.5k, while their sous chef earns RM5.5 to 7k only. Exploiting third world country labour, much?” the Twitter user questioned, expressing her concern towards all the staffs who are allegedly underpaid.
The post has been flooded with numerous responses from netizens. According to a Twitter user, “I’ve worked at a hotel under Sunway previously. To tell you the truth, the salary there is too low even for those who multitask. They didn’t even provide parking for the staff. In the end, I decided to pull out (of the job). Not to mention the politics.” Others also wrote, “They should pay their waitstaff at least RM3k with that ridiculous food price.”
