Not too long ago, we were lucky enough to experience the monthly brunch buffet held on every last Sunday of the month at THIRTY8. From its large array of cuisines and food available to the breathtaking view of KLCC, the experience was one you need to have for yourself to really appreciate it.
This time around, we were given the opportunity to try out their new afternoon high tea menu! It was a sensational experience filled with various pastries, desserts and sweets.
A Uniquely Malaysian High Tea Experience
When you think of high tea, what do you imagine? Probably dainty looking cakes and lifted pinkies as you clink tea cups against each other against a beautiful backdrop. Well, while THIRTY8 definitely gives you a beautiful backdrop and dainty cakes, their sweets come with a uniquely Malaysian twist!
At first glance, their selection of pastries, desserts and sweets may seem just like any other high tea selection. However, hidden within their tier cake plate stand lies various Malaysian-inspired cakes you wouldn’t expect at all.
One that really struck us as quite oddly unique was their Terung Sabah Crème Brûlée – yes, you heard that right: Terung as in eggplant. The dessert was savoury and salty instead of the usual sweetness you get from your typical desserts. While definitely an acquired taste, it was not what we were expecting at all.
If you thought white coffee could only be consumed as a drink, then THIRTY8’s bavarois infused Ipoh White Coffee will surprise you the same way it did us. Encased in a small edible chocolate cup, the Ipoh White Coffee is served with palm sugar jelly. It combines the sweetness of the jelly and chocolate with the slight bitterness of Ipoh white coffee in a way that was somewhat refreshing.
But above all else, one of our favourites was definitely their Ipoh Lotus Root! Made from grass-fed beef with sichuan chilli sauce, their Ipoh Lotus Root is a beef patty that knocked our expectations out of the waters. We weren’t sure what to expect when we saw the beef patty at what was meant to be an afternoon tea meal, but we were pleasantly surprised by it nonetheless.
Alongside its iconic Twin Towers backdrop, THIRTY8’s offerings of Malaysian-esque high tea snacks brings a whole new ambiance to the already breathtaking restaurant, bar and lounge. Even their sweeter options carry a uniquely Malaysian taste to them, allowing for a Malaysian-High Tea fusion we didn’t expect.
If you’re interested in giving their new menu a try, THIRTY8’s Afternoon Tea is available daily, excluding every last Sunday of each month, from noon till 5:00pm at RM188 nett for two persons. You can learn more about it here.
