One of the best things about knowing how to cook is that you can try out any recipe from all over the world. You can be as creative as you want when preparing a dish but as a chef, you must also learn to respect the dish and the culture it’s from. One dish can represent an entire country so one must be mindful when preparing it and that’s exactly what this chef did.
Andy Hearnden, known as Andy Cooks on his socials, is a cooking content creator from New Zealand who posts videos of himself preparing delicious food from all over the world. Recently, he posted a video that’s been getting a lot of attention from Malaysians because he prepared…wait for it…Curry Laksa!

The 58 seconds videos starts off with the chef asking his wife what she wants to have for lunch to which she answered, “Curry Laksa”. Then the real magic and excitement begin. The video managed to gain over 2 million views, 217.8k likes, 3.2k comments. The comments sections are obviously full of Malaysians.
Netizens are impressed with the way the New Zealand-born chef prepared the dish and one main thing that got many talking about is the fact that he used a ‘lesung batu‘ (stone mortar and pestle) to crush some of the ingredients for the Curry Laksa. You don’t get to see a foreigner using that everyday to make any dish really.
The other ingredients he used for the spicy noodle soup dish and the way he prepares it is similar (or possibly exactly like) to how you’d see Malaysians do it. The video ends with Andy giving the beautifully prepared dish to his wife. Netizens commented on the video with many giving their approval of the chef’s Curry Laksa.

Other than the Curry Laksa, the content creator have also prepared other familiar dishes to us such as Biryani and Chicken Rice. With a wide range of dishes he can cook and nicely edited videos, it’s no wonder he has over 2 million followers on TikTok.
