Most people look forward to their birthdays. After all, it’s a day to celebrate their birth with cake and presents. However, for Hong Kong-Canadian artist Joyce Cheng (郑欣宜), her most recent birthday marks something else.

Joyce celebrated her 35th birthday on 30th May. The artist certainly enjoyed her birthday, as evidenced by the many wishes she received. However, Joyce turning 35 also means that she’s finally of legal age to receive the 60 million Hong Kong dollars (~RM33 million) inheritance left by her late mother, Lydia Shum Din-ha (沈殿霞).

Before her passing, Lydia had apparently left a will which included her daughter Joyce. She specified that Joyce, who was 21 at the time, must be 35 years old before being allowed access to her inheritance. Prior to that, Joyce would receive 20,000 dollars (~RM11,000) each month as living expenses.

Unfortunately, living expenses in Hong Kong are high. At one point, Joyce only had 26 dollars (~RM14) left in her account. However, she managed to pull through without any help from her biological dad, TVB actor and Cantopop singer Adam Cheng (郑少秋).

Although it sounds rough, Lydia supposedly had good intentions when she made that stipulation in her will. Joyce revealed in an interview that Lydia wanted her daughter to learn to work hard and not be lazy. Well, Joyce has certainly lived up to her expectations by nabbing several awards for her music.

Joyce’s inheritance apparently includes properties which are speculated to be worth about 100 million dollars (~RM56 million). Safe to say, it sounds like Joyce is set for life.

However, the artist made no mention of her newly gained wealth on her birthday. She merely thanked her friends and fans for their wishes and wished everyone health and happiness.
