Badminton fans have been riding high since Malaysia won against Indonesia in the Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) 2022. The team secured the win yesterday (20th February) and broke Indonesia’s three-year streak.
However, two fans in particular are on cloud nine right now. Who wouldn’t be? After all, it’s not everyday national player Lee Zii Jia (李梓嘉) gives away his shoes!
On 19th February, fans were lining up to cheer the national team on and wish them all the best as they headed back to rest for the finals the following day. The team looked tired as they walked past, but some stopped to greet their fans.
Zii Jia had acknowledged his fans as he walked but when someone called his name, he paused. Surprisingly, he held out his pair of shoes for fans to grab. Two lucky people managed to get their hands on them and Zii Jia seemed nonchalant as he walked away from stunned fans.
It turned out to be the same pair Zii Jia had been wearing for the semi-finals. Additionally, as one fan revealed, he’d also signed the shoes for the lucky duo. “Lucky me, (I) got the shoe from Lee Zii Jia,” she stated happily on Twitter.
Netizens have expressed joy for her with some teasing at being jealous about it too! One even quipped that she should kiss it every night. “Also, congrats, sis!” they added. A few have speculated how much she could sell the shoe for, but those were just speculations. There were also rumours that Zii Jia gave away other items, like his clothes and racquet.
Zii Jia must have been excited to help secure the win for Malaysia and wanted to share it with his fans. It may also have been a way for him to thank fans for their support, especially after his fiasco with BAM earlier this year.
Well, congrats to the Malaysian team! We look forward to seeing more of what they have in store, especially with Zii Jia’s formation of his new club.
