The disabled community is often discriminated against by society – it’s the bitter truth. Even worse, mocked. The government and NGOs have been doing their best to make things easier for them (easier parking access, disabled-friendly public transport), but it still comes down to society to make things better for the differently-abled.
Proof of how some elements of society have been mistreating the disabled community is shown in a TikTok video uploaded by a TikToker with the username @iswanishak or Dak Ayam, as he’d like to be known.
The TikTok video that he uploaded was of him and his friend, @riderviral, or Dak Ajim in one of Kuala Lumpur’s shopping mall parking lot. In the video, he mentioned how his friend, Ajim, has a trick on getting a parking spot in the crowded parking lot. He mentioned how the trick usually works out in their favour.
This TikTok video has managed to draw the attention of the disabled community in Malaysia, especially Ras Adiba Radzi, a senator cum representative for Malaysia’s disabled community. She has demanded an official apology from both men for mocking the community. “We’re (the disabled) already at a disadvantage, the society looks down on us, and the facilities provided and reserved for us are always misused by the abled. We all are going to be disabled one day, so don’t you dare mock us. Please apologise now,” she demanded from the two men, Ajim and Iswan.
She has also tried raising more awareness, at the same time expressing her regret for the mockeries thrown towards the disabled community by society in another video posted on Instagram. The video was once again, a form of mockery towards the disabled, but this time it’s two female cyclists.
She captioned the video with “After one, then another. What is up with you guys? Do you want to be disabled so bad?! Do you think we (the disabled) don’t have feelings up to the point that you feel like you have the right to mock us?”
Pursuing this issue, the mocking video has been taken down by the owner and an apology video was uploaded last night (8th December) by one of the men mocking the disabled, Iswan. However, an apology has yet to be uploaded by the other guy. He has only reposted Iswan’s apology video.
@dakayamkahau Kepada rakyat malaysia dan golongan oku saya memohon maaf🙏🏻..matlamat video itu tersalah erti..silap nya dari saya .terima kasih kerana menegur saya
It’s a shame that our country is heading for a developed country status, but the mindset and discrimination towards certain communities are at some point far more worse than third world countries.
We hope Malaysians will change for the better in the future.
