Are We Going Back To Black With IKEA’s New Charcoal Series?

We Malaysians have a tendency to come up with various trends — some are fun, some are just plain bizarre. We also know that for a fact Malaysia is a land of food; hey, we’d drive for 3 hours just for a bowl of Asam Pedas, don’t we?

Other than that, we are a melting pot of different cultures which also means that we have different fusions to different cuisines. That’s a great thing, ain’t it? But when modern trends come in the picture, sometimes, it’s not the best thing. Remember when boba was basically on almost everything?

What even was that? Dark times, indeed.

Also, remember when the whole nation was obsessed with cheese? Which was also on everything? But, we think, the cheese did in fact enhance the flavours. Wasn’t too bad of a trend.

Now what’s this new trend that IKEA is trying to bring to us? Is it even new? Or are they just bringing it back as gimmick? Why is the soft serve and the sausage black?

Remember when charcoal was the trend a few years ago? Exactly, they are bringing it back to us! Both the soft serve and the sausage are coloured with activated charcoal, making it black in colour. Gothic, huh? The soft serve isn’t only black and shiny but it is also caramel flavoured! As for the chicken sausage — cheese enthusiasts, brace yourself, cheese sauce is drizzled on top of the sausage in between the black charcoal buns.

IKEA Singapore first launched the menu on 1st November, and yes, according to the official website of IKEA Malaysia, the menu is already in store! Although, it is a seasonal menu, and will only be available up to the last day of 2021 (31st December 2021).

Now that you know it’s already made available in IKEA stores, we know what you’re currently thinking, how much does it cost? What we like about IKEA is, other than the simple and sleek furniture they sell, is that how good the food is but still reasonably priced. And these two seasonal menus are no exception — the charcoal chicken sausage is reasonably priced at RM3.90 while the soft serve is as low as RM1.90! Feel like trying both? Why not! Get it both at a slightly lower price of RM5.50.

We cannot wait to go and give it a go for these two seasonal menus. Now, do you think IKEA could bring back the charcoal trend? Will we go back or go black?
