Culture has always been a controversial point on the Internet. While most netizens love celebrating different cultures, it can be easy to put a foot wrong. When that happens, there will always be a flood of criticism, as Yua Mikami (三上悠亜) found out.
AV (adult video) idol Yua Mikami recently posted a short video of herself in an ‘improved’ Hanfu on Weibo. The Hanfu, which showed a little too much was quickly deemed “an insult to China”.
Mikami was initially part of idol group SKE48. However, after she quit the group in 2014, Mikami went on to dominate the AV industry. Known for her innocent child-like looks and large bust, she was dubbed as “National AV Diva”. Mikami has always been active on social media. Not only does she have a YouTube channel and TikTok, she also has an account on Weibo to interact with Chinese netizens.
On 11th September, Mikami posted a 15-second video of herself dancing while wearing a Hanfu. “Chinese clothing (is) cute,” she captioned, even giving a thumbs up at the end of the video. However, unlike the usual Hanfu, Mikami’s version had a low V-cut and transparent sleeves. It showed off her cleavage and was fairly eye-catching.
Although the video has currently received over 14 thousand likes, there were still netizens who felt strongly about it. “You call this Hanfu?” one commentator asked scornfully as another said, “Please don’t insult my Hanfu.” Other netizens stated it was an “insult to China”.
“No Chinese can look at their own culture being ruined like this,” a netizen raged. “If she has the courage, she (should) take a photo with a sexy kimono photo. (See if) the Japanese scold her then.” Others claimed it was “unacceptable” and requested the authorities to “deal with” the insult.
Mikami has yet to comment on her less traditional view of the Hanfu. It appears as though the moderators on Weibo have yet to take any action on her video as well.
Although her take on the Hanfu is certainly creative, righteous netizens clearly do not agree. But as Mikami’s career is a fairly controversial lifestyle, she may be thick skinned enough to ignore the insults thrown her way.
